France’s new Interior Minister from Les Républicains, Bruno Retailleau, is making one of the important decisions regarding migrants. He is considering ending the AME ((Aide Médicale d’État) program. This program aims to give free medical assistance to all migrants, even those who don’t have legal status. Many on the Left say that this decision highlights that the new government is aligning its ideas with far-right opinions. While some ministers have voiced their dissatisfaction.
During an interview on September 23rd, the Interior Minister from Les Républicains, Bruno Retailleau, explored his thoughts. He wants to reduce the number of migrants from France. According to him, the best way to do this is to eliminate AME. Currently, this program provides free medical assistance for at least 3 months. All foreigners who live in France can benefit from the program. However, the government spent millions of euros to initiate this program. The proposal to change AME reflects a broader political shift and raises concerns about the treatment of migrants in France’s healthcare system.
Nowadays, AME is a hot topic in France that often results in arguments. Bruno Retailleau, a former senator and leader of the Les Républicains party, aims to introduce the changes in France’s immigration rules. These policies were only partly fixed during tough talks at the end of 2023. He tried earlier to change the AME but failed.
Some of the people still don’t want any changes in immigration policies. This includes the left-wing group Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP) and some members of President Macron’s party. According to them, AME has the purpose of helping needy people and is important for public health.
They also think the Right makes the program’s costs sound higher than they are and that it doesn’t attract as many immigrants as claimed. However, there are known problems with the AME system. He thinks that paying attention to the immigration laws of nations that have many immigrants is important. He wants to collaborate with nations such as Hungary, Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands. All of these countries want to follow stricter immigration rules. Working on a single platform with the same objective could help to update European laws that no longer work well.
His comments have caught the attention of the European Union, which means changes to the EU’s Asylum and Migration Pact could happen. Retailleau also said that the Schengen Agreement should also be reconsidered. According to this deal, people are allowed to move freely between European Union countries.
Furthermore, he said, France should once again pay attention to its deals with former colonies such as Algeria. This agreement proved beneficial for the Algerian nationals but became a threat to France’s security and finances. He wants to sign new deals with North African nations. This time agreement can manage better immigration. This idea is the same as the Italian prime minister did in the past. He followed the same strategy to deal with immigrants.
Based on future actions, this strong statement will face judgment. It has a purpose at the Rassemblement National party and its supporters are likely to gain support from Marine Le Pen and her group members. This approach could also be very difficult to achieve. It is not easy to start working on this plan. Many people across France’s government also don’t agree with him. So, this strategy requires careful attention before implementation.
The Minister of the Interior understands he might encounter challenges in the National Assembly since he doesn’t have a majority. He wants to use all the powers of his position as a minister. He stated, “I can go pretty far,” showing his determination to push forward, even if he faces some opposition.
