The legendary French actress, Brigitte Bardot, aged 91 at the time of her death, was famous not only for her groundbreaking contributions to the film sector but also for her personality that was remarkably provocative, leading to several controversies surrounding her comments on immigration, Islam, and sexuality.

Previous statements made by the woman have led to lawsuits and disapproval in the past, going back to the very complex mix of pop culture, politics, and the ideals of the far right.

Even though her fame from the early 1950s through the 1960s had already branded her an idol across the world, it is with her activism that she not only divided people with her views but also became a lightning rod of politics in France.

What legal issues did Bardot face for her statements?

Bardot was charged several times between 1997 and 2008 for inciting racial hatred. She was fined a total of five occasions for her comments against minority communities, especially Muslims, and people of French overseas departments. The most publicized case was when she was fined €15,000 in Paris court when she said,

“This population that is destroying us, that is destroying our country by imposing their acts.”

She referred to Muslims.

She was also convicted of hate speech when she labeled the residents of the island of Reunion as ‘savages.’ This case highlighted the contradiction between the tough laws that regulate hate speech in the country of France and the offensive comments that she has made, and she was labeled as the most divisive celebrity personality that the country has produced.

How did her political views align with the far-right?

Over the years, her political ideology has tended towards aligning with those of France’s extreme right groups. She eventually married Bernard d’Ormale in 1992, an ex-advisor to the National Front party, which has been known for pro-nationalist policies and opposition to immigrants.

She publicly supported each successive leader of the party, from its founder through to its current leader, Marine Le Pen, whom she nicknamed

“the Joan of Arc of the 21st century.”

In her stance, she supported the course and arguments that the political party took on issues such as immigration, the nation idea, and protecting culture. Her adoption of far-right politics earned her both applause and condemnation that contributed to her treatment as Bardot in her later life.

What were Bardot’s most controversial statements?

Bardot was regularly in the tabloids for inflammatory comments she made about immigration, Islam, and homosexuality. She often framed aspects of Muslim practice, especially ritual animal killings during religious holidays, as a threat to French society. She also spoke her mind about gay and transgender people, using terms usually considered slurs.

Besides these statements, she lamented what she perceived as cultural decline in France, linking social changes to immigration and globalization. These inflammatory pronouncements transformed Bardot from celebrated screen star to polarising public figure, whose pronouncements consistently provoked debate about race, religion, and gender in French society.

How did the public and political figures respond?

The reactions to Bardot’s political statements and activism significantly divided people. Supporters, especially from the far-right quarters, hailed her as a protector of French culture and national identity, while critics labeled her as xenophobic and Islamophobic.

After her death, the current leader of the National Rally in France, Jordan Bardella, honored her on social media as follows, citing Bardot as the “Marianne” of France and acknowledging her beauty and impact on the country. Nevertheless, several sources pointed to the complexities of her impact, as she was convicted of several crimes and was known to make provocative public declarations.

Did her political views affect her legacy?

Bardot’s affiliation with the far right and provocative statements necessarily influenced how she has been remembered. Even as she has been an iconic figure in cinema and ultimately a representative of French glamour, her political views and repeated offenses for inciting hate speech have eclipsed part of her larger legacy.

In her last publication, entitled “Mon BBcdéaire” or “My BB Alphabet,” Bardot vented her anger at modern-day France, as well as her home town of Saint Tropez, now infested with the very wealthy holidaymakers whom she had once helped make famous. In it, she expressed her disgust at both homosexuals and transsexuals, in an indication that she stuck firmly to her beliefs until the very end.

Why is Bardot still relevant in political discourse?

The example ofBrigitte Bardot epitomizes how celebrity impact remains wholly influential in politics even after many years. She was convicted in court and remained vocal for numerous years regarding supporting far Right politics.

However, they also emphasize the legal and cultural ways that societies have of governing the spoken word and preventing hate crimes. Even after many years since the film fame that catapulted her to international praise and recognition, Bardot’s observations remain highly relevant today in French society.
