The Paris Olympics are going to start soon. At that event France put restrictions on French athletes to wear hijab in games. This clearly highlights that France openly violates international rules and also opposes human rights. such a ban discriminates against Muslim women and girls, limiting their opportunities and participation in sports.
This banning hijab severely impacts Muslim women and girls at the level of French sport. Their ability to win the upcoming game is also affected by this decision of the French government. Furthermore, it also undermines their rights to show their cultural and religious identity freely.
It is very surprising to know that France is the only nation that implements this rule on Women. At the same time, 38 other European countries do not issue any such kind of rule that violates human rights. This stance creates a conflict with the clothing rules established by prominent international sports bodies such as FIFA, FIBA, and FIVB, which allow such headgear.
This ban raises a serious question on freedom of expression and also on France policies in the context of sports. International standards always promote diversity and acceptance. But this decision of France highlights a serious tension between national and international regulations.
France not only violates human rights but also creates an awkward situation for women athletes by banning hijab. These bans violate multiple international human rights treaties that France is obligated to uphold. This rule also opposed the values and commitment outlined in the international Olympic Committee’s human rights framework.
By banning hijab France damaged its reputation on an international level. It also undermines the principles of equality and non-discrimination in sports. This ban is also against the athletes’ religion and also creates an environment where players are unfairly restricted based on their religious beliefs. So, this decision also clearly violates the meaning of sports. Playing games means promoting stability and fairness rather than putting restrictions that oppose the athletes’ religion.
Anna Błuś from Amnesty International also strongly opposed this decision of France. She said it is not fair that France bans French athletes from wearing sports hijabs at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This action of France clearly contradicts with the claim that Paris Olympic 2024 will be the first gender equality game. She believes that this move describes France racist profile and also gender-based discrimination in sports.
Such a restriction excludes athletes from Olympics on the basis of their religious attire. It simply means that organizers are failed to upload the principles of equality
This decision, she argues, is a clear example of how discriminatory practices continue to pervade the world of sports.
Rules that control what women can wear are deeply concerning. It also violates the human rights of Muslim girls and women. This type of discriminatory policies impact on their ability to openly participate in sports and play without any hesitation.
By implementing such rules France is blocking efforts to make sports more inclusive and accessible. It is important to know that everyone has the right to choose what they want to wear. Especially in sports where inclusivity and accessibility should be paramount. This rule restricts many Muslim women and girls to take part in games and also sends a harmful message that they are not welcome in the sporting community.
No policymaker should have the authority to dictate what a woman can or cannot wear. Women must have the freedom to dress according to their own choices without any external interference. Forcing a woman to choose between her love for a sport and her faith, cultural identity, or personal beliefs is unfair and oppressive.
Everyone deserves the right to pursue their passions while staying true to their identity and values. Respecting and upholding a woman’s right to make her own choices about her attire is crucial in fostering a society that values diversity and individual freedoms.
The Olympics games are not starting now, there is still an opportunity for French authorities and the international Olympic Committee to reconsider its decision. They should remove all restrictions on athletes wearing hijab in the Paris Olympic 2024. This change would be the sign of unity.
It is also important for French authorities to make sure that all athletes feel comfortable during the game. Also they have equal opportunities to take part in the sport without any restriction and discriminatory barriers.
