The United States introduced new abortion laws that are very concerning. After the Supreme Court decision, 14 states have completely banned it. The Court said, the Constitution does not guarantee a right to abortion. The states that banned it include Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.
However there are two nations, Georgia and South Carolina that ban the abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy. Also strict punishment announced for those who help someone to get an abortion.
The Alabama Supreme Court also announced punishment for those who broke the rule. They ruled that anyone who destroys an “unborn child” outside of a biological uterus, including frozen embryos, can be held criminally responsible.
Tom Parker said, “each human being, from the moment of conception, is made in the image of God.” This statement clearly highlights that some states are very serious about their abortion laws.
Alabama’s decision to give embryos legal rights isn’t unusual. Many states already do this. This includes Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. There are two nations that give these rights to all fetuses. It includes Wyoming and Georgia. In states that don’t specify when personhood begins, many new laws are being proposed. North Dakota, Missouri, and West Virginia are thinking about changing their laws to match Alabama’s decision.
But in the case of France, things are different. In the mid 1970’s when France made the laws about abortion. That was the time when the United State did with Roe v. Wade. Since then, mothers having 14 weeks pregnancy are allowed to abort their baby and all the costs covered by their national healthcare system. From France, the United States could learn alot about handling the situation.
Furthermore, France took strong action after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. France President Emmanuel Macron along with French citizens decided to follow new rules regarding to abortion.
They decided to make the right to abortion permanent in their country’s constitution. All political leaders and also 90% of the public support this rule. However, one person who was against it was the Catholic Church. But their opposition was not valued in the country where people often protest to make their voices heard. This shows how serious France is about protecting the right to abortion. This clearly highlights how serious France is about its protecting the right to abortion.
The overwhelming support for the measure in the National Assembly in January and the conservative Senate in February demonstrates a significant shift in French politics. Senator Mélanie Vogel’s statement, “Everyone told me a year ago it was impossible. Nothing is impossible when you mobilize society.” This sentiment was further validated on March 4, when Parliament approved the constitutional amendment by a vote of 780-72, far exceeding the three-fifths majority required.
The direct and clear message was written on the Eiffel Tower, “ my body my choice”. This message symbolizes a powerful moment of solidarity and progress for women’s rights in France.
The constitutional amendment passed by the Parliament on March 4, with a vote of 780-72. The Eiffel Tower displayed the message, “My body, my choice.”
The United States could be the next on the list.
Many American citizens opposed the complete abortion ban law. While two-third believe it is ok to allow the abortion. Only one in ten against the law that abortion always be banned. Even in the strictest states, 58 percent think abortion should be permitted until at least six weeks into pregnancy.
In elections from 2022, many voters support the new abortion law. Voters in both Democratic and Republican states have really liked candidates and measures that don’t show any criticism to abortion rights. In 2024, if abortion stays a big issue in 2024 and also candidates take care of women rights and support federal law, it looks like voters will keep liking it.
According to Laura Rahm from Central European University, “A system always shines or cracks when it’s put under pressure”. This clearly highlights that the upcoming election will once again focus on the importance of different issues like abortion rights.
